Want to actually control your computer and be free of big tech control? There are so many options beyond just Windows and Mac OS.

The most common desktop os replacement is Linux. The core code is found at Kernel.org and packaged up by many different groups for distribution along with other applications. Here are a few of the most popular distributions and one super old one I love.

• Ubunutu
  • One of the 2 big distributions, this is going to have the best support for steam,slack, zoom etc out of the box
• Pop OS
  • System 76 makes computers designed specifically for Linux and has a custom distribution. They are building a new desktop environment called Cosmic.
• Elementry OS
  • A thoughtful, somewhat Mac-like, take on Linux. A great team and good candiate for that spare laptop from a few years ago.
• Fedora
  • The other big distribution, more bleeding edge than Ubunutu generally
• Slackware
  • Only for people that love messing with computers, this distribution focuses on gathering software together and presenting it as stock as possible.
